BISMARCK, ND – The Bismarck Bobcats fell to 0-4-2 on the 2009-2010 season as the Alaska Avalanche rattled off two third period goals to topple the Bobcats 4-2 at the VFW Sports Center Saturday.
Facing a 2-0 deficit mid-way through the second period, the ‘Cats rallied for two goals to tie things at 2-2 headed to the third period.
The rally began when Dominic Panetta found a streaking Casey Kleisinger behind the Alaska defense and Kleisinger beat Avalanche goalie Landon Peterson to cut the Alaska edge to 2-1.
Two minutes later, Panetta evened the score on the power play, ripping a wrist shot through Peterson’s legs off a Ryan Jacobson face-off win with 3:19 left in the second.
The Avalanche took control two minutes into in the third when Zach Smith notched his second goal of the weekend, lifting a rolling backhand over Bobcat netminder Ryan Faragher to install the Avalanche to a 3-2 lead.
Alaska put the icing on the cake with 90 seconds left in regulation with a Kyle Pichler tip of a Daniel Hildebrandt shot over Faragher’s glove for the final 4-2 margin.
Pichler’s tally came on the power play, snapping the Bobcats’ league-high streak of 30 straight opponent penalties killed.
The Avalanche built their early lead on Berkley Scott’s fourth goal of the weekend nine minutes into the first and Zach May’s first of the season ten minutes into the second.
Peterson finished the night with 25 saves to improve to 2-0-1 on the year and boost the Avalanche to a 7-1-1 mark to open the season.
Faragher managed 19 saves and saw his record dip to 0-2-1 on the year.
