Bobcat Alumnus Ashbrook Commits to RPI
TROY, NY – Fresh off a 34-point 2016-17 season in the capital, Bismarck Bobcats alumnus Tristan Ashbrook announced Tuesday that he has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
“Tristan was a big part of our team last season, and we knew it was a matter of time before a D-I program scooped him up,” hailed Bobcats head coach and general manager Layne Sedevie. “Not only is ’T-A’ a skilled forward a great shot, but he’s also a tremendous student so it’s no surprise to see him land at such a prestigious school like RPI.”
Ashbrook compiled 13 goals and 21 assists in 2016-17 with the Bobcats—his first junior campaign—before being drafted into the USHL this past May by the Lincoln Stars, with whom he made his debut on Friday.
Now under the leadership of former Canisius head coach Dave Smith, RPI is one of the oldest collegiate hockey programs in America: dating back to 1901. An ECAC member since 1961, the Engineers have reached the NCAA Tournament as recently as 2011.
Ashbrook becomes the second current or former Bobcat to commit to a Division I program this season, joining current Bobcat center Grant Johnson, who committed to Northern Michigan University in August.
Back in Bismarck, the Bobcats make their return to the VFW Sports Center Friday when they open up a two-game, two-night home set with the surging Kenai River Brown Bears.
