BISMARCK, ND – For the first time since the 2006 Robertson Cup Playoffs, the Bismarck Bobcats find themselves at a two-games-to-none disadvantage after a pair of disappointing results to open the 2015 postseason.
Despite the major disadvantage in the best-of-five series, the Cats are taking a level-headed approach to Friday’s win-or-go-home road tilt against the Minot Minotauros.
“I don’t believe there is any panic at all in our locker room,” offered Bobcats head coach and general manager Layne Sedevie, whose teams have faced series-opening deficits in each of the previous two postseasons. “We were close in both games and a couple bounces go the wrong way and the scoreboard ends up with an ‘L.’”
Over the course of the North American Hockey League’s modern era, dating back to the AWHL merger of 2004, only the 2009-10 St. Louis Bandits have rallied back from a 2-0 series deficit when the defending national champs popped off three straight wins to knock out the Texas Tornado en route to a Robertson Cup Tournament appearance.
“The fact of the matter is, we’re not looking at it as needing to win three straight games,” added Sedevie. “Our approach is that we need to win one game Friday to get [the series] back to our barn.
“We bring it back to Bismarck and it’s a whole new series.”
In four playoff runs under the fifth-year bench boss, the Cats have won three straight games in a single series three times.
