BLAINE, MN – The Bismarck Bobcats fell in their weekend finale at the 2010 Sherbrook NAHL Showcase at Schwan Super Rink, dropping a 3-1 decision to the Motor City Metal Jackets Saturday.
With both teams battling tired legs and sore bodies in their fourth game in as many days, a sloppy first period passed without either team scoring.
For the first time on the young season, though, the Bobcats saw their opponent strike first—albeit halfway through the game—when Motor City’s Anthony Coles made a diving stab to pop a loose puck over Bobcat netminder Ryan Faragher to post the Metal Jackets to a 1-0 lead with 10:54 left in the second.
The Bobcats struck back quickly; just 1:06 after Coles’ opener, Charlie Mosey deflected a Danny Ray 40-footer between the legs of Metal Jackets goalie Gordon Ceasar to boost the defending champs to a 1-1 tie.
Motor City would do the rest of the scoring, however, as Coles added his second of the night with 6:53 left in regulation with, poking home a Petrus Sipila rebound on the power play for the eventual game-winner.
The Metal Jackets capped the scoring with an empty net strike from Cody Wydo at the 19:32 mark of the third for the final 3-1 margin.
Faragher fell to 1-1-1 on the year with the loss, stopping 24 Motor City shots in defeat.
For the second straight day, the ‘Cats ran afoul of a hot goalie as Ceasar turned away 29 of 30 Bismarck efforts to improve to 2-0-0.
The Bobcats return to action with Coors Light Opening Night at the VFW Sports Center Friday at 7:15 PM against the Alexandria Blizzard. The game, sponsored by Cumulus Media, will have a party atmosphere with music from Hot 97.5, free Russell’s Reserve Ribs from Cloverdale Meats, the Bobcats’ national championship ring ceremony and banner raising and much, much more.
