Draft Day Trade Nets Bobcats Top Overall Pick
FRISCO, TX – With mere hours on the clock before the start of the 2017 NAHL Entry Draft, the Bismarck Bobcats made big waves Tuesday, sending a trio of picks to the Northeast Generals in exchange for the first overall selection.
In exchange for the top pick, the Bobcats sent the Generals their first-round pick (6th overall), a third-round pick (66th, via Johnstown) and their fifth-round selection (98th).
“Teams in our league scout so well, that everybody knows who the top players available are, so we knew we needed to get as high of a pick as we can to make sure we got our guy [Tuesday],” explained Bobcats head coach and general manager Layne Sedevie, who also traded for Tanner Tweten and Tommy Altounian from the Minnesota Magicians in a pre-draft maneuver on Monday.
It is the first time under Sedevie that the Bobcats have had the top overall pick.
Needing to fill their protected list to 30 players, the Bobcats will still have six selections—just in a new order:
Rd | Pick | Origin |
1 | 1 | (from Northeast) |
2 | 29 | |
4 | 75 | |
4 | 78 | (from Coulee Region) |
6 | 121 | |
7 | 144 |
The Draft will begin at 1:00pm; fans can follow live Bobcat coverage across the team’s social media on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. There will be a free broadcast of the Draft courtesy of the North American Hockey League at HockeyTV.com.
